SONOS Soars Again
I have been an early adopter of the SONOS system products. Aside from the infamous ‘app-ocolypse’, a top tier home sound system that others measure themselves to. The SONOS play is the latest, greatest addition to the stable. Great sound (crisp highs and mids with solid bass) and great portability. Sits very nicely between the Roam and the100s. Highly recommended.

Portable and waterproof with great sound
Great new product from Sonus. All the great sound you expect from Sonus but now in a smaller waterproof speaker.I bought 2 to use around our pool and connected it in stereo mode. I love it.

What they don’t tell you
I was looking for a way to unclutter my desk top from the array of connecting cords associated with having speakers, printer, a mouse, etc. and I thought a wireless speaker would be a good way to go. When I saw the Sonos Play on the site I figured it would be the solution to what I needed. No connection audio cable needed and a rechargeable battery. I have never owned this type of product before so I was unfamiliar with its features. Two things I discovered that I will pass on to you in case you are thinking along the same lines as I was. One: This is not an all-purpose speaker. It is designed to deliver music only and cannot be connected to you PC or laptop as an audio speaker. I realized this only after I purchased the item and attempted to sync it to my laptop. Upon researching the internet I discovered that connecting the speaker to my laptop was not an option. Two: the charging plate that comes with the speaker requires an adapter to be able to plug it into a standard household socket. The adapter is not included with the item and will require you to make a separate purchase. I was able to return the item with not problem. Neither of these pieces of information I mentioned were made clear from the Amazon site where I found this item, so benefit from my experience if you just want a computer speaker. This is not it.

Almost keeps up with the Move 2.
Honestly I am very impressed with how closely this performs to the Sonos Move 2 but at a significantly smaller size. Obviously the Move 2 is more powerful and better for larger gatherings. This thing is great for a campsite, quick adventure or to fill a room in your house.

Good sounding, easy to set up portable speaker
Sonos is known for good sounding, easy to set up speakers. This new speaker is no exception. From the start, you can tell Sonos spent some effort creating a great experience. The packaging and setup are very reminiscent of Apple where you use pull tabs to open the package. No scissors or other tools are needed. Once opened up, you see the instruction booklet on top followed by a cloth-wrapped speaker with its dock underneath it.Setup is a breeze. First install the Sonos app on your smartphone. Then plug the dock into any USB-C charger that is 18 watts or more and set the speaker into the dock. It will power on. Like most Apple setups, a popup appears which then guides you through the entire setup. It will automatically configure WiFi for the speaker and will even warn you if the phone’s WiFi network doesn’t match those of other Sonos speakers you may own. Once connected, you have the option of running TruePlay, Sonos’s method of using ping sounds to measure the acoustics of the room the speaker is in. You essentially walk around the room while moving your iPhone up and down while the speaker puts out sounds that are received by the iPhone’s microphones. Android phones also have a TruePlay setup but it is simpler and not quite as effective, due to the vast differences in Android phones. This speaker also allows you the option to set up a voice assistant with two available choices. One is Sonos’s own voice assistant while the other is Alexa.Once this setup is complete, you are ready to play music. There are two ways to do this. One is through the Sonos app, which can sync with multiple third party streaming services. I tested it and it works fine. Another way is through AirPlay 2. I streamed music from my tablet to the speaker, and it played flawlessly.Sound-wise, this is an excellent speaker. It has a decent bass with no harsh frequencies. You can also use an EQ to adjust the sound to your liking, but I found the default to be ideal for me. Sonos is known for good sounding speakers, and this follows that tradition. The volume this speaker can produce is also rather impressive. I generally leave it at about 1/3 volume, which means it can get really loud. What sets this speaker apart from most of Sonos’s product line is its portability. Because it charges through a simple dock and has no wires protruding from it, it can be carried around using the strap attached to the back. The speaker is not too big nor heavy, so it is easy enough to carry around, including outdoors. You can take it outside to play anywhere you want to. Battery life is good enough to last all day and more without charging. But just put it back on the dock when you’re done for the day.The speaker also has controls on the top, including play/pause, prev/next, and a speech bubble for invoking the voice assistant. I do wish it had a touch volume slider on top like they do with other speakers in the Sonos family. That is the only negative I found when using this speaker. It is a bit expensive compared to other similar products in the lineup, but it does sound great and provides portability.
