Decent effect, but not a pro DJ Pixel Tube analog
So, I purchased these looking to see if I could recreate a DJ Pixel Tube type effect, knowing that DMX control wasn’t going to be part of the package, but hoping that there would be some semblance of syncing of effect, or at least passable audio response to music that looked like something coordinated. NopeHowever, this kit is a fraction of the cost of a true DMX DJ Pixel Tube lighting effect. Here’s my experience with these;Lighting brightness and presentation – they are bright enough for a dark/dim room, and visible in a bright room, including office area with overhead florescent lighting. Not to the brightness of pro fixtures. The tubes are lit by an internal pixel LED tape affixed to the back of the ‘cloudy’ plastic tube, making a pretty convincing effect until you see the back of the unit and the black stripe where the tape resides. Fine enough as long as you keep the back area not visible from the viewing location.Physical setup and quality – Not bad. I’m sure they won’t take a beating, but good enough for home/occasional use. Included stands and connection, and the tubes are made well. Setup and teardown are easy, and the included case is more than quality enough to hold, carry, and deal with. All in all, pretty decent. Handheld remotes are RF, and have great range and easy to use.Lighting effects (auto patterns) – These are selected by choosing the ‘auto’ button on the remote, and then scrolling through the presets with the M+ and M- buttons. The listing states that there are ‘over 500 lighting effects’ – I counted 57. Regardless, the patterns are fine and there is good variety, and you can change the speed and brightness of the effects being shown a bit. The issue is, the patterns fall out of sync as they ‘play’ at a slightly different speed on each unit… So while it may look good and dandy when you initially turn them on, come back a few minutes later and the patterns are out of sync, looking a bit haphazard and messy.Lighting effects (sound response) – This is where things really fell apart for me. The audio response is very poor, and each light behaves quite differently than the other, and mostly just twitches and rapidly flashes with an occasional response to a beat of sound that only happens on a couple units. Have tried several scenarios, from regular home listening levels to my DJ PA system, and a quiet room. The lights act the same and are very, well, annoying in the sound mode. This was a deal breaker for me. Additionally, you can change the patterns in sound mode, but unfortunately you cannot adjust any sound sensitivity or response speed to make anything make sense.Battery Life – I didn’t fully test the battery life, as I became a bit disappointed in the units for my use-case scenario. They functioned on battery for the full time I tested them and didn’t fail, which was a few hours cumulative.Wrap up – So, for my use case they didn’t fit the bill. However, many will enjoy these lights for what they do and how they perform, just don’t expect syncing of the units or dynamic sound functionality that makes sense. Depending on how you use them, you can create a facsimile of current DJ/club lighting trends, if you work within the wheelhouse capabilities of the product.
