Well designed and powerful
This is probably the best designed product I’ve used them a very long time. The style is unique. It just looks good! The color of the unit is matte beige with the exception of the raised battery bump a striped translucent tan. In addition to the design, it also feels really well built. It’s lightweight but feels durable. The controls are analog which I love! Easy to adjust the brightness level and color tone with the physical wheels. And does it get bright! Those version also comes with two diffusers – a plastic one and a silicone one. The plastic snaps on while the silicone one slides over the unit. I think I prefer the plastic one but there might be a use case for the silicone.Overall, such a well designed fill light!

Impressive Output, a Few Things to Know First
My closest comparison point for this light is the Aputure MC RGBWW, which I use regularly and which runs slightly higher in price, likely due to the RGB capability. I tend to use lights like these to add a bit of fill to a scene or throw something into the background for contrast rather than as a primary source, so keep that context in mind.Starting with the body: it does not feel like an $80 light. It feels cheaper. That is the one area where the premium impression breaks down, because everything else about it, the output, the controls, the overall function, feels well put together. It is just the chassis itself that underwhelms. On the control side, Two knobs, that is it. Adjusting this in the middle of a setup is faster and more intuitive than navigating menus on my Aputure MC. For a light this straightforward in its purpose, that simplicity may be a feature (unless you want/need to remember the values it was set at before of course). The output is genuinely impressive. In terms of raw lumens it outpaces my Aputure MC by a significant margin, which is the main thing going for it. The tradeoff is that 40W pulls hard on the battery. I have had it nearly dead just from setting up a scene before a shoot even started. If you are planning to use this at full output for anything beyond a very short session, plan on running it off an external battery pack.Fan noise is worth mentioning since it is actively cooled. For something that outputs 40W, I feel it’s necessary. Even my little 25W Aputure spot light has fans. In my use it has not been an issue since I do not mount lights on camera. The fan itself is quiet enough, but I would be cautious about hard mounting it directly to a DSLR body given how easily vibration and noise transfer through a rigid uninsulated mount. It has real potential and the output alone makes it interesting, but the body quality and battery drain keep it at four stars for now.

Shine on me!
Smaller than expected and that’s a good thing! The build quality is sturdy and the knobs are smooth and easy to adjust. Color, brightness and USB C charging are excellent too. Very easy to use. So far the battery life is so good. I love the fact it can easily fit in my pocket with my small pocket sized tripod that I use with it. High quality product.

Well… It’s brighter???
Pros: Longer Battery life, Super Bright, 1/4 20 at the bottom of the unit.Cons: The foot bracket is gone, The new color scheme makes it impossible to read the dial (Cream on white???), AND STILL NO DISPLAY SCREEN!!! (The one thing we all asked for.)They actually made this light worse to use. While I do welcome the brightness of the lens’s LEDs and the longer battery life, there’s not much more that would make this an upgrade or a buy. This new incarnation is more frustrating to use then the original. With so many other pocket lights on the market, I just can’t recommend this one.

Small but insanely bright – perfect for events
I just got the ZHIYUN FIVERAY M40 SE Combo 40W Pocket LED Light and already really like how it works. The brightness is honestly impressive for how small it is, and it’s super easy to use right out of the box.Definitely going to be using this for my next events.

Great product, looking forward to using it more.
I bought this because the ring lights didn’t seem powerful enough. This definitely fixes that issue. I haven’t had the chance to check battery life on it yet, but I like that it can be charged instead of having to be plugged in. So far the reliability seems great. It feels smooth and easy to operate and carry around. The value for momey is great considering all it can do. The lighting is versatile enough to cover different lighting and brightness. I will upload more pictures but I just got excited over how these turned out right out of the box.

The compact form factor makes it easy to carry the light in your camera bag.
The Zhiyun FIVERAY M40 SE is a compact, rechargeable and bright Bi-Color portable LED camera light. The compact form factor makes it easy to carry the light in your camera bag. The included accessories, such as the all metal compact ball head, hard and soft diffusers along with the USB-C cable make modifying the quality of light as well as mounting the light and recharging on location, an easy task. Adjusting the brightness of the light as well as the color of the light is simple with the two easy to control dials on the side of the light. The 1/4”-20 mount built into the bottom of the light allows quick mounting to the included ball head or threaded light stands. If the reliability of this product is anything like the other Zhiyun products I’ve owned it will be part of my kit for a long time.

Compact but powerful light that delivers excellent brightness and very clean results for video work. The output is strong and consistent, making subjects stand out clearly while keeping the overall look natural and balanced. Colour adjustment is smooth and gives plenty of flexibility, so it works well in different locations and lighting conditions. Image quality appears sharp with accurate tones, helping recordings look polished and professional. Controls are simple to use, and changes can be made quickly during filming without interrupting the flow.

This ZHIYUN FIVERAY M40 SE Combo Bi-Color Video Light is rated at 40 watts and has a colour temperature that is continuously variable between 2,700K and 8,500K. The lighting unit on its own measures 132mm wide by 78mm tall by 32mm deep and weighs 250 grammes. The body is of plastic construction and has a quarter BSW threaded brass insert in the centre of the base so that you can mount it on virtually anything that is camera related. It also comes with an attachment with a cold-shoe sized mount on it so that you can put it on top of your camera. The back of the lighting unit has an air intake and the side, top and bottom have vent holes in so that air can be blown out by the built-in fan which comes on when it gets a bit warm – the fan is quite. You can see from the thermographic images that there is a heat source in the bottom right as you look at the light from the back but the unit doesn’t get unbearably hot.It also comes with two light modifiers – one is a hard plastic and the other is white silicone rubber – these are fairly easy to attach and detach but neither will fall off on their own – and they diffuse the light quite well.Measured at one metre, the light level at a colour temperature of: 2,700K gave 3,420 lux; 6,500K gave 3,932 lux and 8,500K gave 3,964 lux. The advertising for this says 17,100 lux but that is at 0.5m and lighting obeys the inverse square law – 17,100 lux corresponding to a measurement at 48cm so it is within experimental error. At one metre where the illumination is around 4,000 lux, there is sufficient light to give an exposure of 1/30th of a second at f/8 with ISO 200 (DIN 24) speed or 1/250th of a second at f/8 with ISO 1,600 (DIN33) speed. The light modifiers attenuate the light as well as spreading it out. I measured the light levels at the centre at one metre’s distance with a colour temperature of 6,500K and found that the light level with both light modifiers was reduced from 3,932 lux to between 450 and 460 lux at the centre which represents a reduction of 3.1 stops so they each lose around 7/8ths of the source’s light from the centre of the illuminated area. One criticism is that the values on the knobs for the colour temperature and the intensity are printed in white on a beige background which, whilst they are legible in high light levels, become virtually invisible in lower light levels although if you use only one colour temperature in your photography, you can just tape it down with a piece of gaffer tape – this will also mean that you will not accidentally change the colour temperature by accident when you want to change the light intensity. The battery has a fair life although if you put it up to full, it lasts less than an hour. If you use the USB C connector to plug in a V-Mount block, you get a lot better performance out of it and then, you can change batteries as you need. I did the light level tests with a V-Mount battery plugged into it.On the whole, this is a handy and compact light source for taking video and it will mount in a cold shoe socket on a camera cage or on the hot shoe of the camera itself. The light modifiers produce a three stop reduction which is a bit on the high side but there is always the option of not using them.
